One of the main challenges facing the use of renewable energies is that they must be supported by backup systems that keep them active during times when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing.

Dutch company Ocean Grazer has developed an “ocean battery” capable of storing renewable energy on the sea floor. The device was presented last Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (USA).

The innovation, called Battery Ocean, is designed to be installed on the sea floor near offshore renewable energy generators, such as wind turbines, floating solar farms and systems that use tidal power.

The process, similar to a hydroelectric dam, relies on air chambers located on the sea floor, which are filled with water by a wind farm. When power is needed, ocean pressure forces the water through the mechanism, which includes the turbine, and the result is electricity.

    The challenge of renewable energies

One of the main challenges facing the use of renewable energies is that they must be supported by backup systems that keep them active during times when the sun is not shining or the wind is not blowing.

The device has an efficiency of about 80 percent in energy storage, said Frits Blick, chief executive of the Dutch company, quoted by AFP.

He also stated that the company’s goal is to have a battery offshore by 2025 and another on land, in the north of the Netherlands, by 2023.
