The USA suffered a painful exhibition defeat Saturday night into Sunday. Colombia was too much for the seven-time Gold Cup winner. PSV Eindhoven players Malik Tieleman and Ricardo Pepe came on as substitutes.
With four players from the English Premier League, three players from Serie A, two players from the German League, one from the French League and one from the Spanish League in the starting line-up, America had fielded a strong team. However, this was no match for Colombia, which is one place behind in the FIFA rankings (from eleventh to tenth). Within twenty minutes, the South Americans led 0-2 thanks to goals from Jun Arias and Rafael Santos Borre, who turned FedEx Field upside down with a scissor kick.
The United States gave something back through Timothy Weah, but after Tillman and Pepe reached the lines, Colombia remained far behind. Richard Reus shot a drawn ball and Jorge Carrascal made it 1-4 after a good move. The final score came from former Feyenoord player Luis Sinistra, who took advantage of an incorrect play pass: 1-5.
America will also practice against Brazil on Thursday. The Copa America Championship begins in the United States on Monday, June 24. It is located in the group with Panama, Bolivia and Uruguay.
