MADRID – It is not uncommon for Spanish chef José Andrés to appear on television or be written about in Spain and the United States. In most cases, it has less to do with the many restaurants he owns in the United States, but more to do with the charitable work he does. He made headlines twice this week because of Joe Biden and NASA.
José Andrés is a Spanish chef who was born in Asturias and moved to the United States in 1990 at the age of 21. Before that, he worked for two years at the world-famous El Bulli restaurant on the Costa Brava under Chef Ferran Adrià, but was fired from there in 1990, and then his American adventure began.
José Andrés now owns several restaurants and other businesses in the United States and has managed to gain a lot of fame due to his falling out with former US President Donald Trump when he insulted Mexicans and the chef decided that he no longer wanted to work with Trump. He is now known for his organization World Central Kitchen He is currently active in Poland to provide food to the Ukrainians who fled, which he also did on the Canary Island of La Palma, which was destroyed by the volcano.
But José Andrés also managed to make the news this week as the current US president Joe Biden appointed the Spanish chef as an advisor to the US government on sports and nutrition. As co-chair of the Sports, Fitness and Nutrition Advisory Council, he will be responsible for promoting physical activity and healthy eating for Americans. In 2015, José Andrés was also awarded the National Medal for the Humanities by then-President Barack Obama for his philanthropic work.
But the Spanish chef also made the news because he will serve meals to astronauts after an agreement with Axiom Space From the AX-1 mission. This Space menu will have a Spanish flavor with paella, jamon iberico (Spanish ham) and ratatouille with ham (pesto con cerdo). Former employer Ferran Adrià will also influence NASA's menu of special Marcona almonds and olive oil.
