China has closed a secret project in the United Arab Emirates. Informed sources told the American Wall Street Journal that the American intelligence agencies suspected that it was related to the construction of some kind of military installation.
According to the newspaper, the United States concluded on the basis of satellite images that China is working on a military project in the port near Abu Dhabi. Construction there stopped after the United States warned the Gulf state government. He was told that relations with Washington would come under strain if the UAE allowed Chinese military activities.
The UAE government does not appear to have realized that the equipment was for military purposes. A spokesman for the UAE embassy in Washington told the business newspaper that his country had never considered allowing China to build a “military base or outpost”.
Relations between the United States and China deteriorated sharply under former President Trump. Trade and handling of the coronavirus pandemic, tensions over Taiwan and the “integration” of China’s Hong Kong are some of the points of conflict.
