In the vast outback of Australia, drone pilot Chris Tangi captured a rare and stunning natural phenomenon. Using his drone, Tangey captured unique images of the “willy-willy,” also known locally as the “dust devil,” moving across a recently burned patch of wilderness. The video was titled “Ashnadu” because of the amazing way the tornado flings ash into the air.

A “willy-willy” is a small, rapidly rotating tornado that usually becomes visible as it picks up dust and debris. But what distinguishes Tangi’s photographs is the interaction of this phenomenon with the consequences of forest fires. The whirlwind throws a large amount of ash into the air, creating a hypnotic scene against the black earth background.
This phenomenon is not only visually impressive, but also provides important insights into the dynamics of forest fires and the processes that follow their destruction. Scientists and meteorologists show great interest in such images because they can help better understand the interactions between fire, land and air.
Filmed responsibly
Chris Tangi photographed this special natural phenomenon in the remote northern part of South Australia. He stresses that the footage was filmed responsibly: “This was filmed by a professional in an unreported, out-of-control wildfire, without any aircraft or firefighters present.”
