Daniil Kvyat was one of the drivers we didn’t see again in Formula 1 in 2021. The Russian is currently still a reserve driver for the Alps, but could make the switch to NASCAR.
Since Kvyat switched to Toro Rosso in 2016, his F1 career appears to have spiraled downhill. There are still some bright spots, such as a podium finish at the 2019 German Grand Prix, but there appears to be no return to first-class motorsport for the Russians – despite him being a test and reserve driver for Alpine. With Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso, it looks like this team is ready for the foreseeable future.
So it wouldn’t be so strange if Kvyat was looking at other possibilities in the meantime and according to Haas team boss Guenter Steiner, he does. In particular a place in the racing series in the United States.
“Daniil Kvyat will be attending the race in Martinsville. Everyone who goes to NASCAR asks me ‘Hey Guenther, can you arrange a meeting for me?’ Daniil will come to see if there are any interesting options for him as he is not racing in Formula 1 at the moment.”, says the Italian in Stewart Haas Racing Podcast.
More F1 drivers to the US
Moreover, according to outspoken team boss, Kvyat is not the only former Formula 1 driver who wants to take a chance in another racing series, just like Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen already do.
“A lot of drivers want to try it. Some are also making the switch to IndyCar. It’s a big step for them because these racing series are so different. It’s like going from NASCAR to Formula 1. It’s not just the driving itself, it’s the whole system.”Steiner explains.
