More and more countries recognize the Moroccan character of the Sahara, including the United States. It has now been more than a month since the United States did so. Now Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita wants European countries to do the same by “breaking out of their comfort zone and following in the footsteps of the United States.”
Last Friday, a hypothetical conference brought together 40 countries to discuss the Moroccan proposal to grant the Sahrawi regions autonomy under Moroccan supervision. In particular, Bourita has taken refuge in Europe saying they need to break out of their comfort zone and take a bold step.
According to Bourita, the focus should be on autonomy as a solution to years of conflict. He says the old continent says there is a measure of convenience. Bourita says Morocco supports litigation even if it takes decades. He also called on Europe to follow the international trend.
“For twenty years, American governments have been in favor of autonomy as a solution,” the minister said. Remarkably, neighboring Spain was not present at the meeting.
