Many winter sports enthusiasts already go on a ski holiday. This is much earlier than usual. Early snowfall and low alpine snow line attract them to winter sports areas. The snow showers are not over yet.
There is still a chance of snow showers on the northern side of the Alps on Wednesday. According to Weeronline, the maximum snowfall is around 1,200 metres. This is already somewhat lower than in recent days.
Snowfall ranging from 5 to 15 cm is expected in the northern half of the Alps. In Switzerland, snow thickness may reach 20 cm regionally.
“This is not an unnecessary luxury, because the rainfall has left its mark high in the mountains,” Weeronline wrote. He added, “The amounts of snow expected until Wednesday may cover those paths again.”
The falling snow did not go unnoticed by winter sports enthusiasts. Holiday providers Sunweb and TUI have taken notice. “The first snowfall attracts winter sports enthusiasts,” says a TUI spokesman.
According to TUI, 60 percent more bookings were made compared to previous weeks. “There has already been huge interest in staying over Christmas and we are now seeing demand increasing rapidly in the surrounding weeks.”
Sunweb is mainly seeing an increase in the number of winter sports flights booked to France. “Wherever it snows the most.” According to Sunweb, the number of visitors to French ski areas was 12 percent higher last week than in the same period last year. The major winter sports provider points out that people are traveling to the upper and lower regions.
